Tennis Drills On The Midcourt – Orange Stage Practice

Tennis drills in the midfield – also known as the Orange Stage – are primarily suitable for children and young people aged 8 to 9. However, as is so often the case, we always recommend adapting the courts and balls to the ability and experience of the players. It is definitely advisable to go back a stage and play in the midfield, even with older children who are still out of their depth in the large field. This is particularly useful if the hitting techniques are not yet secure. Smaller distances and slower balls make it easier to learn the techniques.

The focus of mid-court drills in tennis should be on consolidating stroke techniques. However, an overview of the game and initial tactical approaches such as net attack, stop ball and lob should also be practiced. Serving from above should also play a role. Due to the smaller court, a volley is often used for net attacks, which improves experience at the net and allows game situations to be automated. Learning to rotate the ball forwards (topspin) should also be part of the mid-court exercises. The technical foundations are laid here in the Orange Stage.
